Caring for Your Handblock-Print Cotton
Handblock-print cotton is made by pressing carved blocks onto fabric by hand, and it rewards a little extra care in the wash. This guide applies to our handblock-print cotton kurtas, including the Beige Butti kurta, the Maroon Geometric Print kurta, and the Laal Printed kurta.
First wash
Wash your kurta separately for its first few washes. It is common for prints to release a small amount of excess dye early on, so a separate first wash helps you see how the piece behaves before it shares water with other clothes. Turn the garment inside out and use a gentle cycle or hand wash.
Separating dark prints
Wash dark prints separately from whites and light colours, especially in the early washes. Once you are comfortable that the piece is not releasing colour into the water, it can be washed with other darks.
Drying
Dry the garment in the shade, turned inside out or flat. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade prints over time
What normal hand variation looks like
Because handblock printing is done by hand, slight variations in print alignment, colour depth, and motif placement are part of the craft and are not defects. Each piece carries small differences that reflect how it was made.
